Thank You Girl Scout Troop 3553!
Thank You Girl Scout Troop 3553!
Girl Scout Troop 3553 recently completed work on the Woodland playground to help earn their bronze award. The Bronze award is the highest honor a girl scout Junior can achieve. Earning this reward required them to explore their community, identify a program and come up with a solution. Troop 3553 noticed that kids are spending a lot of time inside watching television or playing on electronics causing them to not get enough exercise. The troop decided to add two new games to the Woodland playground: hopscotch and four square to get the students moving! Thank you so much Troop 3553! (Go to Photo Gallery page for more photos)

Melissa Kuch - Author and Alumni- Visits Woodland!
Melissa Kuch - Author and Alumni- Visits Woodland!
Melissa Kuch was born and raised in Hicksville, NY, and first realized her passion for writing after her first short story was read before her third grade class at Woodland Elementary School. She is the author of The Hypothesis of Giants series, with book one, The Assumption, book two, The Change Agent, and book three, The Control, currently available on Amazon. Melissa is now living her passion by inspiring the next generation of authors through her writing workshop and mentoring programs. She lives on Long Island, NY with her husband Michael and their daughter Lily. You can follow Melissa on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and on her website www.Melissakuch.com. Ms. Kuch presented “Adventures in Storytelling” to the students in grades K-2, a fun Interactive workshop with an introduction to storytelling which allowed the students to help build a story from scratch. The workshop gave them the opportunity to choose the characters, the setting and the plot as they worked together to create the story.. This enabled the students to see first-hand the story blocks needed in the creation process and inspired them to hone in on their imagination by wearing their "Magical Writer Hats"! Ms. Kuch presented “How to Create a Magical World” to the students in grades 3-5. From Harry Potter to Percy Jackson, magic in literature is something readers are drawn to. But how do you start writing your own fantasy novel? Ms. Kuch spoke about writing her magical YA novel series, “The Hypothesis of Giants”, and how she incorporated magic into her writing. The workshop was interactive and students had the opportunity to try their hand at writing their own magical story. (Go to Photo Gallery page for more photos) Thank you Ms. Kuch!
