Woodland Library Cafe
A Book Tasting at the Woodland Library Cafe
As a fun way to share my love of reading and expose students to books that they may never have tried, I hosted a book tasting! The library became the Library Cafe. The menu included a variety of fictional genres and non-fiction books like biographies, almanacs and animals of all kinds. One student wondered what I’d turn the library into next. He thought maybe a dentist! (Go to Photo Gallery Page for more photos)

Woodland Thanksgiving
Woodland Thanksgiving Baskets
On Saturday, November 16th, Woodland families came together as one to create Thanksgiving baskets for families who could use a little extra help this holiday season. After collecting very specific food items for over a month at Woodland, the students got a chance to see what happens to all of those food donations they generously brought in each day. Students in grades Pre-k thru 5 went "shopping" with an organized list created by our amazing PTA, for the Thanksgiving food items that would be in each basket. Stuffing, cornbread, canned vegetables, marshmallows, pie crusts and pie filling, (just to name a few), went from the table into the baskets which were soon piled high with all the necessary ingredients to make a Thanksgiving feast! The baskets were complete with colored pictures and beautiful cards, wrapped and ribboned, and will be delivered to deserving families this week. A total of 10 baskets in all, as well as boxes of extra food that was donated to local churches for their food pantries. It was an amazing and special day for all of us. Woodland Kids Go to the Dogs– in a Good Way
Woodland Kids Go to the Dogs– in a Good Way
This fall, Woodland Elementary School in Hicksville kicked off what they anticipate will be a regular ritual, with students chomping at the bit to read to some cuddly new canine buddies. The school is conducting its first-ever Read to the Dogs program. Through Bideawee, therapy dogs and their owners are visiting the school on a monthly basis to give students the opportunity to read to a non-judgmental, receptive and loving audience. The practice of reading to dogs has long been considered an effective means to get children excited about reading, while also building their self-confidence and helping struggling readers practice and improve their literacy skills. According to Principal Beth Swanson, Woodland’s program is tied into the school’s our character education initiative: students who demonstrate exceptional character traits above and beyond what is expected of them in school are identified and have their names placed into a raffle. “Every month, right before the dogs visit, we pull names from the raffle and selected students get to read to the pups,” said Swanson. “The children love it! It’s been a huge success!” The selected students have an opportunity to read some of their favorite books and stories to the dogs. Some even attempt to make the dogs feel right at home by choosing non-fiction books about dogs, or fiction books that have dogs as a main character. Each visiting dog’s owner is present to ensure that students safely engage their dogs. Special thanks to Bideawee, the owners and their dogs for making these visits to Woodland possible. Woodland Students Enjoy Reading to the Dogs
On Friday, September 27, Woodland welcomed Bidawee's Therapy Dogs Skyler, Sparkles, and Ginger. Several students who exhibited behavior exemplifying the monthly character traits respect and responsibility were chosen to spend time and read to the canines and their companions. We look forward to monthly visits from Bidawee's Therapy Dogs and will be encouraging students to reveal their very best manners and neighborly attributes this month.
